The two-door Mini Countryman crossover will be dubbed the Paceman, Mini officially announced this week.
Mini executives confirmed the Paceman name at the start of the “Mini Takes the States” event, which is a coast-to-coast road rally from New York City to Los Angeles for Mini enthusiasts and owners.
The Paceman will be the seventh Mini to join the lineup. Though details are almost nonexistent at this point, it’s safe to say the Paceman will initially be available in Cooper and Cooper S forms with a 121-hp 1.6-liter I-4 making 114 lb-ft of torque, or a turbocharged 181-hp 1.6-liter I-4 with 177 lb-ft of torque. A more powerful John Cooper Works edition will probably join the range a year or two later. Like the Countryman, the Paceman will be available with front- or all-wheel drive, and offer six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. As for fuel economy, we expect Mini Paceman EPA-rated numbers to fall near those of the 2012 Mini Countryman, which ranges from 23/30 mpg city/highway for a Countryman S model with all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission to 27/35 mpg for a front-drive Countryman with a six-speed manual.
“The Mini Paceman is the world’s first sports activity coupe in the premium compact segment,” said Mini’s senior vice president Dr. Kay Segler at the rally’s kick-off ceremony, “It combines a clear appetite for extravagance and infectious driving fun in a style that only Mini could pull off with such authenticity.” We’re guessing the staff responsible for the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque would disagree with Mini’s assertion about the Paceman being the first premium compact two-door SUV.
The Mini Paceman will be launched next year.
