Citroën’s DS Wild Rubis concept, scheduled for an official debut at the Shanghai Motor Show, hints at the brand’s eventual crossover model. It would top the DS lineup that already encompasses the DS3, DS4, and DS5.
The Wild Rubis carries over a lot of design cues seen on the Numéro 9 concept that appeared in China last year. That’s hardly surprising, as Citroën said the Numéro 9 was an amalgam of styling languages that would eventually be used for sedan, crossover, and executive sedan models. The rounded front fascia features headlights with geometric shapes and angles, a hexagonal black grille, and a bulging hood with curves and creases. Twenty-one inch wheels, a steeply raked rear windshield, and chrome roof rails that extend onto the C-pillar define the car’s profile view. Out back, chrome triangles surround narrow LED taillights, and rectangular exhaust tips bookend a wide chrome strip beneath the license-plate holder.
At 185.0 inches long, 76.8 inches wide, and 62.6 inches tall, the DS Wild Rubis concept has the squat proportions of an elongated Range Rover Evoque. The long hood is supposed to conceal a plug-in hybrid system, but thus far Citroën has provided no more details on what would power an eventual production model. Last year’s Numéro 9 concept had a 225-hp, 1.6-liter turbo-four gas engine and 70-hp electric motor.
Citroën hasn’t announced when it will put a crossover inspired by the DS Wild Rubis into production. Adding the range-topping model would help expand the appeal of the company’s DS lineup both at home in Europe and in China.
