The Wall Street Journal has published a detailed description of Chrysler’s restructuring plan. The soon-to-be-implemented strategy includes the killing off of several Chrysler mainstays. Fiat will be bringing a few of its offerings to these shores to supplement the voids.
The products lost in the rearrangement are the Chrysler PT Cruiser and Sebring. These will be dropped in order to push the Chrysler brand toward a more luxurious nameplate. Chrysler will soon adopt the Fiat 500 and a Fiat-based 300. Dodge loses its Caliber, Nitro, Avenger, and Grand Caravan to keep the company more in tune with its trucks, in addition to the Challenger and Charger, which will be redesigned for 2011.
The Jeep brand shakes off the Commander, Patriot, and Compass while keeping its legendary Wrangler. The Grand Cherokee stays, redone for 2010. The returning Alfa Romeo brand will sit atop Chrysler in luxury and will be bringing its Mito, Milano, and an unnamed mid-size sedan for 2011.
The Fiat and Alfa products are likely to be built in North America as Chrysler will have production room due to the departing models. We look forward to the return of Fiat and Alfa Romeo and can’t wait to drive the U.S.-spec models.
The restructuring plan will be released by Chrysler next Wednesday in an official statement. Stay with Automobile as we will have even more details next week when the plan is made public.
