Chrysler Offering $1000 Bonus Cash Just for VW Owners – No Trade Necessary

It seems there’s no love lost between Volkswagen and Fiat, despite a ceremonial burying of the hatchet between Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne and Volkswagen Group CEO Martin Winterkorn at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The two companies have had heated disagreements about how to deal with plant overcapacity in the depressed European market, with a Volkswagen spokesperson publicly calling for Marchionne’s resignation as president of the ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles) or European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

But it doesn’t look like the rivalry is completely dead and buried, as Bloomberg reports Chrysler is offering $1000 bonus cash to current Volkswagen owners or lessees in the U.S. And unlike some other programs, the spiff doesn’t even require a trade-in. The offer applies to most current Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram or Fiat vehicles. All that’s required is documented proof of ownership or leasing. Interestingly, the Volkswagen Routan minivan, which is built by Chrysler, does not qualify for the program. The program runs through January 2, 2013.

Although Volkswagen’s group-wide European market share of 24.8 percent positively dwarfs Fiat’s 6.4 percent, the tables are turned in the U.S. market, with VW’s U.S. market share standing at 4 percent, compared to the Chrysler Group’s share of 11.4 percent.
