Clawing its way back from the brink, Chrysler posted a modest five-percent sales gain during the month of July, selling 93,313 vehicles and setting July sales records for the Dodge Challenger and Journey.
“The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is drawing customers into our showrooms, setting the pace and standard for our company, and generating positive reviews both nationally and internationally,” said Fred Diaz, President and CEO of the Ram Truck Brand and Lead Executive for U.S. Sales. “We’re gaining some real traction with the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee, and we look forward to the same when we revamp the remaining 75 percent of our nameplates by year end.”
More than half of Chrysler’s vehicles posted year-over-year sales increases and only the Chrysler brand itself actually lost sales, down 11 percent. The Dodge brand broke even with July 2009 while the Ram truck brand increased sales by 11 percent and the Jeep brand posted a 19-percent gain.
Standout vehicles at Chrysler were the Sebring, up 11 percent to 3092, and the Town & Country, up 18 percent to 8083. Dodge, meanwhile, saw impressive performances from the Charger (up 126 percent to 6023), the Challenger (up 317 percent to 3695), the Journey (up 11 percent to 4610) and the Nitro (up 96 percent to 2186). Jeep Wrangler, Liberty and Grand Cherokee also made strong showings, up 121 percent to 10,043, 70 percent to 4893 and 54 percent to 5407 respectively. Ram saw Dakota sales pick up 49 percent to 1088 while Ram Pickup sales climbed 14 percent to 20,138.
