Think you can max out your credit card and buy enough parts to transform your standard Chevrolet Camaro into the high-performance Z/28? Think again. According to a Technical Service Bulletin leaked online, and published in part by GM Authority and CamaroNews.com, General Motors is tightly restricting the availability of 35 key Z/28 components.
Chevrolet spokesman Monte Doran confirmed today that several Camaro Z/28 parts will be unavailable to the general public. A customer would need to provide a valid Z/28 VIN from their own car to place an order for those parts through a Chevrolet dealership. The idea, Doran says, is due both to the Camaro Z/28’s low production volumes, and the desire to prevent people buying Z/28 parts for other models.
“These are extremely limited parts because the Z/28 is such low volume. We’re not producing a ton of replacement parts,” he told Automobile. “Absolutely we want to protect the exclusivity of the Z/28.”
With the parts restriction in place, it will be far more difficult for owners to “clone” a Z/28 by bolting components onto their regular Camaro V-6 or SS. The list of restricted parts includes the Camaro Z/28’s unique brake rotors and calipers, rocker panels, hood scoop, emblems, wheels, fender flares, differential, driveshaft, front grille, front seats, spoiler, and more. Though it’s not mentioned on this list, presumably a customer couldn’t order the Z/28’s 505-hp, 7.0-liter V-8 engine, either.
“You can’t walk in with your 2010 Camaro and say you want the front end of a Z/28,” Doran says.
Chevrolet sold only 500 copies of the 2014 Camaro Z/28, and all of those have been spoken for at this time. That doesn’t mean all 500 have been sold to customers, however, as all 500 of those cars were sold directly to dealers. In other words, it’s possible there are still Chevrolet dealers with unsold Z/28s sitting in the showroom. For the 2015 model year, Chevrolet plans to sell around 2500 copies of the Z/28. Chevrolet previously said it would limit Camaro Z/28 production to just 3000 cars in total.
