Chevrolet-FNR Concept Car Brings Autonomous Tech to Shanghai

General Motors once experimented with the idea of driverless cars in a 1958 Chevrolet Impala equipped with magnetic pickup coils that followed wire embedded into the road. Times have changed, and now the face of autonomous technology is the new Chevrolet-FNR electric concept car.

The Chevrolet-FNR concept is loaded with sensors and roof-mounted radar that allow for driverless operation. It reminds us a bit of the Mercedes F 015 Luxury in Motion autonomous car, since it too has front seats that can swivel to face the rear seats. Instead of push-button start, the Chevrolet-FNR features iris recognition technology. Gesture controls allow drivers to switch from autonomous to manual driving mode.

Accompanying the wild technology is an equally wild exterior design. Not only does the car boast crystal laser headlights and taillights, but it’s also equipped with dragonfly dual swing doors. Since it’s just a concept, GM didn’t reveal powertrain details, but said the model comes with magnetic hubless wheel electric motors and that it can be charged wirelessly. Inside, we can’t see a steering wheel, but we do notice crazy purple ambient lighting, mesh seats, and headrests that completely envelop the occupant’s head.

Chevrolet is also showing a slew of other new products in Shanghai, including the new Malibu sedan, Chevrolet Bolt EV concept, and Captiva SUV. The debuts coincide with Chevrolet’s 10th anniversary in China.
