Citing no new products and the current economic situation, GM says it will not display any Chevrolet brand vehicles at the 2009 Frankfurt auto show.
“Chevrolet is not going to have a stand at Frankfurt,” said Marc Kempe, Chevrolet’s communications director in Europe.
“We have already launched the Cruze compact car and showed the Spark at Geneva, so there is nothing brand new to show at Frankfurt,” Kempe said.
Chevrolet sold less than 50,000 units in Europe during the first three months of 2009. Sales dropped more than 17 percent in Europe.
“Everybody observing the economic situation at present will appreciate the situation. We have to think very carefully about the investments we make.” According to Automotive News, exhibiting at Frankfurt can cost more than $1 million.
The auto show circuit has taken a beating this year, as automakers pull out of shows where their brands aren’t strong. So far, in addition to Chevrolet, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi have all cancelled appearances at the Frankfurt show.
