Caught: Next BMW M3 Sedan Lapping the Nurburgring

What better place for BMW to test the next iteration of its iconic M3 sports sedan than Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife? Our colleagues at Motor Trend managed to snap the future M car lapping the famed European circuit under a heavy coating of camouflage tape.

It’s clear that the car seen here is based on the new, sixth-generation 3 Series that debuted last week. As with the last M3 we spotted at the ‘Ring, this M3 prototype wears the same swept-back headlights, restyled kidney grilles, and mildly enlarged bodywork of the 2012 model that goes on sale here next February. A close inspection reveals a racier front lip and gaping lower air intake, as well as enlarged wheels hiding big, cross-drilled brake rotors.

One big mystery remains: what will power the sixth-generation M3? We haven’t received many clues from BMW so far. The strongest indications are that the car will employ an all-new, twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. That engine would reportedly produce close to 450 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.

We expect the new BMW M3 will bow around 2013 or 2014. To whet your appetite, check out the full set of spy photos at Motor Trend.
