Caught: Lexus HS 250h Prototype Could Hide CT 200h Sedan

Lexus isn’t going further downmarket than the CT 200h hybrid hatch, but a sedan variant of the CT could help expand the lineup and increase sales. Duane Sempson from Motor Trend caught this prototype on a Los Angeles highway, and now it’s up to us to guess what it is.

While we heard in January 2012 the rumor that Lexus was considering variants of the entry-level CT 200h hybrid, since the CT has remained a hatch-only model. Audi is bringing a new sedan version of the 2015 A3 to the U.S., a body style that’s expected to boost sales of the car that was previously only sold in the U.S. as a four-door hatch.

Through the first five months of 2013, CT 200h sales are down 25.1 percent; could Lexus be planning a CT 200h sedan? Lexus had no comment on the suggestion, but these spy shots make us wonder.

Then again, the rough HS 250h prototype might not preview a future Lexus at all. With Scion potentially moving upmarket, could this prototype be hiding a new four-door model? Is Toyota bringing back the Yaris sedan? Or did someone at Lexus just decide to outfit their HS 250h with a wild vinyl wrap?

Tell us what you think this car is in the comments below. Should Lexus introduce a CT 200h sedan?
