Two weeks ago, we reported that the Infiniti G37 sports sedan would be sold alongside the all-new 2014 Infiniti Q50 to occupy the lower end of the entry-level luxury market. Now, Infiniti has announced pricing for the 2014 Infiniti G37, and it’s a big drop from the car’s 2013 starting price which was actually slightly higher than that of the Q50. Infiniti is also saying that the G37 will stick around through the 2015 model year, surprising considering that the car was introduced for the 2007 model year as has only seen minimal changes since then.
The 2014 Infiniti G37 now starts at $33,455 with destination, making it the cheapest entry-level luxury sedan by a hair as it undercuts the 2014 BMW 320i by just $20. However, the BMW makes do with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out only 180 hp, while the G37 continues on with its powerful 3.7-liter V-6 producing 328 hp. Infiniti will eventually release a turbocharged four-cylinder version of the Q50, but for now this is your chance to get big power for small amounts of money. The 2014 Infiniti Q50 starts $4150 higher but offers the same powertrain as the G37.
The G37 lineup is now simplified to just two models, with the rear-wheel-drive Journey occupying the lower price point and the all-wheel-drive model commanding a $1600 premium. The Premium and Navigation packages are the only options available on either model.
Infiniti now seems to be competing with itself considering the price difference between the 2014 G37 and 2014 Q50, and we’re also confused to why the company has decided to continue the G nameplate just as it debuts its new “Q” naming strategy. Adding to the confusion, the G37 Coupe and Convertible continue unchanged for 2014, but will be called Q60.
Infiniti says this move is intended to position the two cars at different ends of the segment. Think of it as a temporary stop-gap measure until the Q50 introduces its turbocharged powertrain or until Infiniti releases a smaller compact sedan under the Q50. For now, though, this may be a better time than ever to get a screaming deal on an Infiniti G37, a sedan we’ve always enjoyed for its sporty dynamics and power.
