Disney and Pixar have been teasing the new Cars 2 film for some time now, but until the duo pushed a new trailer live on YouTube this week, we had few details surrounding the forthcoming flick.
As we’ve previously heard, Lightning McQueen and his rundown, tow truck friend Mater head to Tokyo, allowing McQueen to take part in the fictional World Grand Prix event. Predictable? There’s a quest, as it appears the entire automotive world comes under attack.
From there, the movie appears to quickly become a James Bond-style spy thriller — albeit acted out by animated cars. Somehow, Mater is confused for a master spy, and drawn into a “race to save the world.” We’re not exactly sure what’s involved, other than AMC Gremlins and Pacers appear sinister, and a Zundapp Janus (how’s that for obscure history?) seems to be the German mastermind behind what appears to be a doomsday device.
Until Pixar decides to release additional teasers (this trailer, for instance, is simply labeled “01”), the rest is up to your imagination. Look for Cars 2 to hit theaters nationwide on June 24, 2011.
