It’s pretty obvious to everyone that the new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe is a blatant copy of the successful BMW X6. So the latest episode of Head 2 Head pits the two bizarre German SUVs against each other in their highest-performance versions, the X6 M and the GLE63 AMG S Coupe.
The two cars are extremely similar on paper, as both have twin-turbo V-8 engines, advanced all-wheel-drive systems, and more than two tons of weight to haul around. Neither can be considered pretty, and neither offers the most interior practicality. And yet, host Jonny Lieberman finds a surprising personality disparity between the two big brutes. On canyon roads, the 577-hp AMG makes a case for itself thanks to the sonorous, powerful V-8 engine, while the 567-hp X6 M is tighter and more composed through the corners.
Next up is a drag race between the AMG and the X6 M, and a third party—the 505-hp Chevrolet Camaro Z/28—also shows up to demonstrate the surprising performance that can be extracted from a huge, lifted SUV compared to a traditional sports car. Then racing driver Randy Pobst hits the circuit at Willow Springs raceway to run some hot laps in the two unlikely performance cars.
