BMW Takes its Best M Customers to ‘Area 51’

Every automaker has various proving grounds scattered around the world, some more secret than others. BMW has one proving ground, Miramas in the south of France, that’s open exclusively to BMW engineers and so secretive it’s known as “Area 51” — normally. The German automaker however, recently opened the testing grounds’ bay doors to an exclusive group of its best M customers and gave us the video to watch.

BMW’s Miramas test track is a former race track located between Avignon and Marseille in the south of France and is normally closed to the public and even journalists. Very few outside of BMW have actually seen the test track from within the perimeters. That makes what these BMW customers did even more special.

The customers were given access to BMW’s entire M lineup and even a few special M3s — the M3 GTS and M3 GT4 (though limited to the passenger seat in the latter car). They also had access to some 32 miles of test track. BMW puts all of its vehicles through their paces at that test track during development — including motorsports vehicles such as the M3 GT4 in the video and even the former BMW Sauber F1 cars.

Check out the video below if you can bear the envy you’ll likely experience.
