BMW Launches Configurator for 2012 3 Series, 328i Maxes Out at $54,120

The full configurator for the 2012 BMW 3 Series sedan is now online, and this one includes pricing. Just like the many other configurators launched for new cars, this one just begs you to go wild with the options and rack up a huge pricing estimate. We took a few minutes – just a few, scout’s honor – to put together our own 3 Series.
A 2012 328i starts at $35,795, while a 335i starts at $43,295, including the $895 destination fee. Options and packages for the 3 Series are typical BMW fare, but the German automaker is trying out an interesting trim strategy with this new model. The 2012 3 Series sedan can be outfitted in three optional trims, which include Luxury Line, Modern Line, and Sport Line. These different appearance packages subtly enhance the exterior and interior of the car. The trim levels are priced differently for 328i and 335i models, but the Sport Line is always the priceiest option of the three.
We were able to load up a 335i to the tune of $56,885. A fully-loaded 328i isn’t much cheaper at $54,120. In the case of the 335i, our fantasy car included the $1700 Sport Line trim, optional $900 19-inch alloys, $1450 Dakota leather interior, $1350 Cold Weather package, $1900 Premium package, $1100 Driver Assistance package, $1550 Parking package, $950 Premium Sound package, and $2550 Technology package. That price also includes individual options like the $500 sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters and $250 BMW Apps iPhone integration feature.
Six metallic paint colors are available at $550 each, and we chose the Glacier Silver Metallic for ours. The only non-metallic color is BMW’s classic Alpine White. Curiously, the M Sport package isn’t listed on this configurator.  If it were, you can bet that’d be the first thing we’d specify. We probably could’ve gotten our as-built price a little higher if we shopped around out of package, but piecing together the package contents individually always seemed to reset our trim level selection.
The new model goes on sale next month, so if you’re looking to replace your older 3 Series with a better Bimmer – or if you just want to kill some time – play with the new configurator for the 2012 3 Series here.
