BMW Celebrates Race Success With M3 DTM Champion Edition

BMW had a strong year in Germany’s 2012 DTM racing championship, with driver Bruno Spengler bringing home the drivers’ title, BMW winning the manufacturers’ points, and BMW Team Schnitzer finishing ahead of all other teams. To celebrate, BMW will build a limited run celebratory model called the M3 DTM Champion Edition.
The 2012 season marked the first time BMW had officially competed in the DTM championship since 1994. The automaker used an M3 race car with a 4.0-liter V-8 good for around 480 hp — and the car proved strong enough to propel the Roundel to victory.
The road-going M3 DTM Champion Edition is styled to look like driver Bruno Spengler’s race car. The coupe wears Frozen Black matte paint, racing stripes, black exterior trim, matte black wheels, and various racy carbon-fiber splitters, spoilers, and diffusers. The interior gets new door-sill plates styled after Spengler’s helmet, a carbon-fiber trim piece bearing his signature and the car’s serial number, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, black Novillo leather, and Palladium Silver trim pieces.
The standard equipment list is augmented by the BMW M3 competition package, M DCT dual-clutch transmission, M driver’s package, navigation system, heated seats, and parking sensors. Buyers also get admission to the BMW M Fascination Nordschleife program, a two-day driver-training course on Germany’s Nürburgring that is conducted with the assistance and tutelage of aforementioned race winner Bruno Spengler.
BMW will sell 54 copies of the car in Germany and “various international markets.” However, a BMW spokesman in the U.S. confirmed that none of the cars will be coming to the U.S. In Germany, the car starts at €99,000 — about $130,000.
