When we last checked in on the world of high-performance BMW executive sedans, the company was reportedly thinking about making an M7 sedan, which would probably supplant the current Alpina B7. While we don’t know about the fate of the M7, we do know that the German automaker just updated the Alpina B7.
The new Alpina B7 is based on the 2013-model-year 7-series sedan, which means that it retains all of the stock car’s upgrades over the 2012 model, most notably the new car’s eight-speed automatic transmission. The B7 also gets the same major engine upgrade–the addition of the Valvetronic throttle-less intake system–as the stock car. In the 750i, the addition of Valvetronic pumps the final output to 445 hp, but in the high-performance B7 they result in a cool 540 hp rating. That power is sent, in turn, to either the rear two or all four wheels, depending on the specification.
Thanks in part to the transmission and in part to the upgraded engine, Alpina now promises that the new B7 can hit a top speed of 194 mph in rear-wheel-drive guise or 193 mph in all-wheel-drive guise. All Alpina B7 models will also be able to hit 60 mph in an estimated 4.3-4.4 seconds, exactly in line with the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG against which they compete.
As usual, Alpina’s upgrades extend further than the engine bay. The B7 is available in standard or long wheelbase models, all of which come with custom interior and exterior design features like available Alpina Blue paint, 20-spoke/21-inch wheels, upgraded taillights, foglights, and headlights, and a new set of kidney grilles. Upgrades include a Bang and Olufsen sound system, LED headlights, and a raft of individual exterior and interior color and upholstery choices.
Prices start at $127,600 for the standard wheelbase, rear-wheel drive model, and the B7 long wheelbase model is $131,500; xDrive all-wheel drive is a $3000 option.
