The ever-recognizable Ford Crown Victoria has reached the end of its long run, meaning it’s also time for a new spec police car. Sure, our domestic automakers out of Detroit have already churned out their future offerings, but could the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series make headway into this highly demanding niche?
The new 5 Series, in 530d diesel-powered sedan and wagon guise, is the latest police car option in the United Kingdom, where BMWs have enjoyed a considerable role in the policing of the general public. BMW police vehicles are procured from the Bavarian automaker’s Special Sales Competence Center and fitted with the RESPoNSe system, an acronym for Responder Emergency Service Package official eNabled System. This equipment includes a range of appropriate crime-fighting kit and eliminates the need for third-party outfitting, which takes time and, in certain instances, extra money. BMW has had a police presence in the U.K. since the mid-1970s.
Throughout the U.K., police teams also have the 330d diesel-powered sedan and wagon, X1, X3 xDrive20d, X5 xDrive30d, and X5 xDrive40d at their disposal. BMW says the 330d Saloon Interceptor draws the most fleet interest but full technical specifications for their police cars cannot be disclosed for security concerns. Here, the front runners to fleet prominence include the Chevrolet Caprice (no civilian model planned), the Dodge Charger, the Ford Taurus, and the BMW-powered Carbon Motors E7.
The R Series motorcycle is the only BMW that sees extensive fleet use in the United States.
