Beijing 2012: Mercedes-Benz Confirms Concept Style Coupe Entering Production as CLA-Class

Before the Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe was introduced at the Beijing Motor Show, pop star Jessie J took to the stage to perform her hit song “Domino.” The connection between the singer and the show car? According to Mercedes chairman of the board Dieter Zetsche, an “avant garde” artist was appropriate to introduce an “avant garde” concept car.

“I hope you’ll agree that was a tremendous performance for a tremendous car,” Zestche said before embracing Jessie J.

Theatrics aside, the Concept Style Coupe gives us an early look at the new Mercedes compact four-door coupe. Zetsche confirmed today that the new model, previously referred to as the “baby CLS”, will be called the CLA-Class when it reaches production in the not-to-distant future. Moreover, he promises that “the production car will do justice to the concept.” In other words, Mercedes won’t tame down the dramatic styling for the real world.

Seen in person, we think the Concept Style Coupe looks fabulous. It resembles the larger CLS-Class four-door coupe from every angle. The car’s windows are frameless, and the roofline curves gracefully. Out front, a bold and large grille is filled with a pattern of concentric dots; the tail looks remarkably like that of the CLS. Inside there are fanciful touches like a carbon-fiber dashboard and air vents that change color based on the temperature of air emitted, along with high-quality materials like those in current Mercedes models.

The CLA-Class will be based on the same Mercedes Front Architecture chassis underneath the A-Class and B-Class compacts. Power for the Concept Style Coupe comes from a 208-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive.
