Mad Max, your new Interceptor is ready. Ford’s Australian Performance Vehicles division (FPV) is usually pretty busy cranking out some hopped-up muscle machines, but for this year’s Melbourne auto show, the division crafted its first-ever concept car.
Expecting a pie-in-the-sky, no-holds-barred flight of fancy? If so, you may be disappointed, but if your pulse quickens at the thought of a rear-wheel-drive, supercharged sport sedan painted like a F-117 Stealth fighter — well, you’ll like this.
Mechanically, the car is no different than a stock FPV Falcon GT, meaning it packs a supercharged form of Ford’s new 5.0-liter V-8 (yes, the same basic engine block found in the 2011 Mustang GT) underhood. According to FPV, that engine is good for a solid 449 hp at 5750 rpm, and a stout 420 lb-ft of torque delivered between 2200 and 5500 rpm. No specs are given on this particular model, but FPV GTs usually come equipped with either a six-speed manual transmission, or a six-speed ZF automatic.
Where the FPV concept does differ is in its appearance. Silhouette Black is a regular paint color, but it’s usually paired with contrasting stripes. The show car’s inverted hockey stick stripes (like those used on the 1970 Mustang Boss 302) are treated to a matte black finish instead. Inside, the black-on-black theme continues, as the FPV car blends black leather seating with piano black dash accents and interior trim.
Other additions include 19-inch forged aluminum wheels, which are treated to both a dark finish and Dunlop SP Sportmaxx GT rubber. Front brake calipers are upgraded to six-piston units, and are fed fresh air courtesy of a pair of brake ducts integrated into the front fascia.
Does all this sound rather production-ready? You bet — and that’s the point. In fact, FPV says if customers voice enough interest, a number of these features could soon be rolling into showrooms across Australia.
“We’ve equipped the car with the FPV GT’s most ticked options,” said FPV general manger Rod Barrett. “That way, it’s a reflection of what our buyers are choosing, and gives us a real world basis to get people thinking. We wanted to demonstrate the possibilities, explore the future, and gauge public opinion to assist us with the evolution of FPV product. “
