Automobile prepares to watch NASCAR and NHRA stars get dirty

Everybody knows that the NASCAR Sprint Cup has a huge following, but some race fans are convinced that “roundy-round” drivers are talentless, one-dimensional hacks.

Well, next Wednesday, June 4, we’ll have a rare opportunity to find out which NASCAR stars (plus a couple NHRA drag racers for good measure) can hang at the legendary dirt half-mile of Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.

I blogged about last year’s event (click here) remotely, but next week, Automobile Magazine will be in the pits at Eldora to bring you exclusive words, photos, and video coverage of one of the coolest races of the summer.

Drivers schedule to sliding the 800-hp, 2300-pound late models include Kasey Kahne, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin, Denny Hamlin, Bill Elliott, Ray Evernham, Cruz Pedregon, and Ron Capps, along with defending champion Carl Edwards and Eldora owner Tony Stewart.

The winner of the race earns only bragging rights and a trophy. However, last year, more than $800,000 was raised for the famous Petty family’s Victory Junction Gang Camp and other charities.

At this point, tickets are nearly impossible to get, but you can follow our coverage at or watch the race live on Pay-Per-View. So says the press release:

“The live, commercial-free broadcast will begin at 7 p.m. EDT with an immediate replay and subsequent replays through the week and following weekend. HBO’s Pay-Per-View racing telecast has a suggested retail price of $24.95 and is available to more than 61 million pay-per-view homes. Ordering information and up-to-the minute racing information is available at”
