We do our best to kick our own butts at the Karting Track
Earlier this week, six of us nutjobs (and two friends) went for an evening out on the town, car magazine style.; That means we hopped into three cars – a Merc S550, Jag XKR, and BMW 335i – and went to the local go-kart track.
I’m not talking about kiddie karts here, I’m talking about the real deal.; Sorta.; We went to Kart2Kart (http://www.kart2kart.com/) in Sterling Heights, about an hour from here.; They have 5.5-hp karts and a 6-turn course.
We did a Grand-Prix format race, which takes place in three ten-minute sessions.; The first session is practice, the second is qualifying, and the third is the race.; Like in a Grand Prix race, the starting grid for the race is determined by each driver’s best lap in the qualifying session.
Our starting grid for the race had 6 Automobile Magazine employees that spanned an almost forty year age group.; More importantly, we spanned a more than sixty pound weight difference.; Sixty pounds is a lot of weight difference when you’re dealing with karts – it’s probably something like 15%.
Pitting 195-lb me up against 135-lb Rusty Blackwell is like us drag racing identical GTIs, except I have 500lb of my best friends in the car.; Guess which one would win.;
Well, I’m happy to announce that big triumphed over small this time, but barely.; And youth didn’t triumph over old age either – the oldest of the bunch (tech editor Don Sherman) kicked the crap out of our two youngest competitors.
And, looking at each of our best laps of the day was interesting – the fastest 5 of us were all within 0.46 seconds!
Most importantly, we had a blast.; Next time you’re in Sterling Heights, check out Kart2Kart and see if you can beat our laptimes.; Post them in the comments – with your age and weight – we’re curious to see how we did.
