One of the best ways to reduce fuel consumption and up performance is to drop unsprung weight. It looks like Audi may have pulled of a neat trick with its TT Ultra Quattro Concept by putting it on a 661-lb diet.
The TT Ultra was created from a TT 2.0T Quattro coupe. In base form, that car weighs in at 3659 lbs and is good for 211 hp, 258 lb-ft of torque, a 0-60 mph run of 5.3 seconds, and a top speed of 130 mph. The TT Ultra, however, tips the scales at just 2449 lbs. Audi has also seen to give the coupe a power upgrade to 306 hp and 295 lb-ft, which means the Ultra can dash from 0 to 62 mph 1.1 seconds faster (4.2 seconds) and hit a top speed of 173 mph – 43 mph better than the stock car.
While Audi doesn’t specify exactly what level of equipment was for the donor car to create the TT Ultra (more equipment means more weight), much of the weight savings come from material changes for the TT inside and out. To net the increased output, the crankcase, crankshaft, balancer shafts, flywheel, sump, bolts, and more were modified to reduce the engine’s weight by 55 lbs. Another big point of weight reduction came in the form of optimized detachable body parts, which, combined with the already-ultra-light aluminum body structure, by an impressive 220 lbs. Magnesium components in the floor and hinges, and use of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) in the rear end, center tunnel, B-pillars, wheels, and roof help to bring the curb weight down even further. Other tricks to shave the poundage include a titanium exhaust with single tailpipe, ceramic front brake discs, and aluminum fixed front brake calipers. Gone are also the metal coil springs, replaced with fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) springs that cut weight by 40 percent. FRP also appears inside – the FRP bucket seats are cribbed from the R8 GT. The lead-acid battery was also replaced with a smaller, lighter battery made with lithium-ion cells.
The crystal-white concept car was created for the annual Wörthersee festival in Germany next month, but suspect the TT RS will remain the most hardcore TT model available in North America for the forseeable future.
