American car buyers have long been tempted and strung along by automakers with promises of clean diesel models that never came to fruition, or showed up several years later than promised. But the German automakers have been the most reliable in offering diesel models in the U.S., and Audi is about to show its commitment to diesel in the U.S. market by announcing four new TDI models. In addition to the A3 and Q7 that have been offered with a TDI option for the past several years, the new models give Audi almost complete coverage of its U.S. product line with a clean diesel option, the only holdouts now being the A4 sedan and A5 coupe.
U.S. diesel fans don’t have to guess any longer. Audi has announced the availability of its 3.0-liter V-6 TDI turbodiesel in the A8, A7, A6, and Q5 SUV. The first model we’ll see is the A8 TDI, with a target on-sale date of Spring 2013. The full-size luxury sedan is expected to achieve a frugal 24 city and 36 highway mpg fuel economy rating, which is 3 mpg city and 5 mpg highway better than its closest diesel rival, the Mercedes-Benz S350 Bluetec. Although not quite as quick as some of its gasoline-powered stablemates, the A8 TDI is still expected to post a reasonably quick 6.4-second 0-60 time.
Fuel economy figures have not yet been announced for the A7 and A6, but will likely match or surpass the economy figures of the larger, heavier A8. The A7, A6, and Q5 TDI models are expected to go on sale in Fall 2013. The U.S.-spec 3.0-liter TDI V-6 will produce 240 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, as it currently does in the Q7 TDI.
