Audi May Build New Q6 to Square Off Against BMW’s X6

Audi may be ready to launch production of its new compact Q3 crossover, but the automaker is now reportedly working on yet another SUV to further expand its lineup. This new report suggests that Audi’s latest project is the Q6, an SUV set to go heads up against BMW’s X6.

According to a report from British magazine Autocar, Audi’s new SUV will not only resemble the BMW in name, but form and function also. When asked about the new project at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month, Audi CEO Rupert Stadler explained it to Autocar as “a model between the Q5 and the Q7… a coupe-like, four-wheel driven model.”

Development of the new model came as its North American and Chinese subsidiaries petitioned for such a vehicle. Also potentially spurring Audi into action was the high demand of the BMW X6, which sold double the number of units expected.

The new model will sit upon a modified version of the larger Q7’s platform, similar to the one currently underpinning the Volkswagen Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne. It will have seating for five, and likely feature V-6 and V-8 engine choices similar to what has previously been seen in Audi’s existing SUV lineup. We also expect the Q6 to receive the same hybrid powertrain available in the Touareg and Cayenne. A diesel engine could be a likely option as well, as Audi continues to roll out its Clean Diesel technology in the U.S.

No official decision to move forward with the project has been announced, but we won’t be surprised if it does get the green light in the coming months. Audi’s United States sales may be on the rise, but do you think there’s room for a fourth SUV in its lineup? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
