Just a year after launching the Vanquish coupe, Aston Martin has revealed the new Vanquish Volante convertible. It is identical to the hardtop in almost every way, save for the lack of a roof.Like the coupe, the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante has carbon-fiber bodywork and a 5.9-liter V-12 engine.
The Vanquish Volante carries over almost all of the design cues from its hardtop progenitor, with a long hood leading into sweeping character lines and wide, rounded rear haunches. The rounded decklid features C-shaped taillights and sports a small rear wing. When lowered, the fabric roof stows beneath a hard tonneau cover that has small humps behind each seat. Twenty-inch wheels, yellow brake calipers, LED running lights, and titanium hood and fender strakes dress up the already glamorous outside. The power-folding fabric top can be opened or closed in just 14 seconds while driving at speeds up to 30 mph. The glass of the windshield extends all the way to the fabric roof without a metal header, a first for Aston Martin, which the company claims eliminates the “visual clutter” of other convertibles.
The interior retains the 2+2 seating layout of the coupe, with an opulent mix of leather, Alcantara, and satin chrome. Standard appointments include parking sensors, a backup camera, a 1000-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with navigation. As with the standard Aston Martin Vanquish, the Volante uses a glass block called the Emotion Control Unit in place of a plebian key.
Beneath the long hood is the same V-12 engine as in the Aston Martin Vanquish coupe, which directs 565 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. Carbon-ceramic brakes, adaptive suspension, and launch control are standard. Aston Martin says performance is on par with the hardtop, with top speed limited to 183 mph. The company says the Vanquish Volante is 13 percent stiffer overall than its predecessor, the DBS Volante, which should further improve handling and performance.
The 2014 Aston Martin Vanquish Volante goes on sale early next year from $297,995.
