If you need more passenger-carrying ability than the Aston Martin Vanquish provides, the British marque has just refreshed its four-door solution, the Rapide S. The upgraded four-seater receives Aston’s new 5.9-liter AM11 V-12, which makes 550 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque – increases of 80 hp and 14 lb-ft from the non-S model.
While the torque gain sounds like it should be greater given the 17-percent jump in horsepower, Aston Martin says the new engine produces more torque down low, with 37 more lb-ft than a standard Rapide available at 2500 rpm. With this added power, the Rapide S can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds, according to Aston Martin. That time is 0.4 seconds faster than a non-S model, though we wouldn’t be surprised if Aston Martin is being a little conservative with its estimates.
The new engine is installed 19 mm lower than a standard Rapide, which helps lower the car’s center of gravity and improve turn-in. Aston also revised the Rapide’s dynamic stability control and gave the car its latest Adaptive Damping System (ADS), which adds a new selectable “Track” mode. Like many other higher-trim Astons, the Rapide S has carbon ceramic brakes.
The changes to the Rapide S’ exterior are a mixture of cosmetic and aerodynamic upgrades, with a revised front fascia and more pronounced molded trunk spoiler being the most noticeable. A new Carbon Exterior Pack is optional, and adds a carbon fiber front splitter, rear diffuser, taillight trim, and mirror caps. Inside, the Rapide S receives a darker surround for the instrument cluster and gets handcrafted, polished glass buttons for the transmission gear selector switches, similar to the ones used in the Virage.
The Rapide’s four buckets seats return with the S model, now with a new optional Duotone perforated red and black leather upholstery. Other options include a rearview camera and dual-screen rear entertainment system. Aston Martin says NVH characteristics have been improved, and the two rear seats can fold down at the touch of a button. The Rapide S will be available for ordering starting in February.
