Aston Martin Rapide Production Moves to U.K.

Production of the Aston Martin Rapide will cease at a Magna Steyr facility in Austria and move to the automaker’s home in Gaydon, England. Aston says that the Gaydon plant now has more capability and flexibility than it did when the Rapide was first developed.

When the four-door Rapide was being developed in 2008, Aston Martin didn’t have the ability to produce another vehicle in Gaydon. Instead, production began in late 2009 at a dedicated facility operated by Magna Steyr in Austria. Since then, improvements and updates at Aston’s plant in England mean it’s now feasible to build the four-door alongside Aston Martin’s other models.

Production of the Rapide in Gaydon will commence in the second half of 2012. Aston Martin asserts that the relationship with Magna Steyr was positive, with production there “reaching benchmark quality standards.” Magna Steyr also builds the Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV and the aluminum bodies for the SLS AMG.
