With the market for four-door coupes (and coupe-like sedans) exploding, BMW has announced plans to put its Gran Coupe concept car into production. The Gran Coupe will embody the concept’s styling, and will slot in size-wise with the 6 Series coupe.
The Gran Coupe will be aimed at existing competitors, such as the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Porsche Panamera, as well as the upcoming Audi A7. It will debut after the next-generation 6 Series coupe likely to be shown at the Paris Motor Show, and pricing will hover around the 6 Series coupe’s $78,000 MSRP.
BMW is also coyly hinting at the possibility of a 6 Series coupe hybrid.
“We are in position to bring out an additional hybrid version since we are using the same powertrain architecture as the 5, 6 or 7 series,” said BMW development chief Klaus Draeger.
The Gran Coupe was previewed by the Gran Coupe concept car, shown at the Beijing Auto Show. If BMW’s history of showcasing concept cars that predict future design trends is any indication, the Gran Coupe’s styling may also influence the next 6 Series.
