Amendment to End Military Motorsports Sponsorship Defeated

Last week, the House of Representatives voted down an amendment that would have cut $72.3 million in military sports sponsorship. The majority of those dollars are spent on motorsports, such as NASCAR, NHRA and IndyCar. The measure was defeated by a vote of 216 to 202, according to USA Today. In addition to motorsports teams, the military also backs the Ultimate Fighting Championship through the Marine Corps’ sponsorship.

This is the second year that a bill from Democrat Representative Betty McCollum of Minnesota to cut sports sponsorship has been defeated. However, the measure was defeated by a significantly narrower margin than in years past, with last year’s attempts in February and July being voted down by 281-148 and 260-167 respectively.

Republican Representative Jack Kingston of Georgia, who co-sponsored the bill with McCollum, said he intends to continue pursuing the issue.

Not surprisingly, NASCAR praised the defeat of the amendment, saying, “Today’s vote continues to protect the ability of our nation’s military to have access to the same sports marketing platforms as other leading brands.”

Rep. Kingston noted that according to NASCAR’s own demographic data, 69 percent of its fans are ages 35 and older, and only 27 percent are between 18-34.
