The Cruze battery-electric vehicle uses an LG-sourced battery pack rated at 31 kilowatt-hours, nearly twice the Volt’s 16 kWh capacity. LG expects the underbody-mounted battery to provide around 100 miles of travel while preserving cargo space in the trunk. An electric motor is capable of sending up to 201 horsepower, good for an estimated 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 102.5 mph. The electric Cruzes will be for South Korea only and are joined by local-market Daewoo Lacetti Premieres that have also been electrified. Full-scale evaluation and testing will roll out by the end of October in Seoul.
“Although there is much more work to be done, our ability to develop this vehicle in less than a year offers a peek at the very promising plans we have for our customers in Korea and around the world,” said Mike Arcamone, GM Daewoo President and CEO.
The electric sedan fleet is confined to South Korea at the moment but GM expects to launch additional testers in other, unidentified urban markets later this year. South Korean conglomerate LG supplied the Cruze BEV’s batteries and propulsion systems.
