Acura TSX to get Hybrid Treatment for 2011, Others to Follow?

Acura may have decided against offering a V-8 anywhere in its lineup, but fans have something else to look forward to: a hybrid TSX sedan.

According to Automotive News, a hybrid version of the TSX — Honda’s European Accord — is poised to debut for the 2011 model year. It also won’t be Acura’s only hybrid — John Mendel, vice president of sales for American Honda, said the brand would have “more than one” hybrid offering.

“Luxury is not about making compromises,” said Mendel. “The key component with the Honda hybrid has been cost, but with a luxury car, we have options.”

For the time being, those options may be relegated to smaller vehicles, until Honda can develop a larger hybrid system for its large sedans and SUVs. We wouldn’t be surprised if Acura eventually stuffs the hybrid powertrain into its TL sedan and MDX sport utility — both would directly compete against hybrid versions of Lexus’ GS and RX, respectively.
