Even though the real car won’t go on sale until 2015, the next-generation Acura NSX will be included as a playable car in PlayStation 3-only versions of Gran Turismo 6.
Back when the original Acura NSX concept debuted at the 2012 Detroit auto show nearly two years ago, there was a ton of buzz surrounding the reveal of the hybrid supercar. For eager NSX fanboys, the inclusion of the Acura NSX concept as a playable car in Gran Turismo 5 was a welcome gift considering the car’s projected 2015 launch date. With Gran Turismo 6 available worldwide today, the NSX concept is a gift that just keeps on giving.
“The wait is over for NSX fans eager to get behind the wheel of the next Acura supercar, and they can rest assured the actual production car will be even more amazing than the in-game concept version,” said Honda’s U.S. senior vice president of auto operations Mike Accavitti.
The NSX concept is one of the most highly-anticipatedcars on the horizon, employing an innovative hybrid powertrain that Acura claims will offer “the excitement of the [Ferrari] 458 at the price of the [Porsche] 911.”
As we previously reported, the engine expected for the 2015 Acura NSX is a high-output twin-turbocharged version of the 3.5-liter V-6 currently at work in the Acura RLX. With that mid-engine V-6 engine powering the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and dual electric motors moving the front wheels, engineer Ted Klaus has promised a highly engaging and driver-centric all-wheel-drive experience. Like the original NSX, we don’t foresee the new supercar breaking any horsepower or 0-60-mph records, but instead achieving the ever-elusive directness and sheer driving pleasure that can’t exactly be measured by a radar gun.
The NSX will be built at Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, and will be followed by a convertible version a couple of years after the coupe arrives in 2015.
This is not the first time Gran Turismo has included a playable but not-yet-in-production car in its driving simulation games. The Chevrolet Corvette C7 prototype was included as a downloadable DLC in Gran Turismo 5, and the stunning Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo concept seen at the 2013 Los Angeles auto show will join the NSX in Gran Turismo 6.
Be sure to check back during the 2014 Detroit auto show in January for more details and photos of the 2015 Acura NSX, and let us know in the comments how the virtual concept drives in Gran Turismo 6.
