2018 Mercedes G-Class Spied (Video)

A new G-Wagen for Beverly Hills

At first glance, it may appear similar to its predecessor's appearance, but the 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class spied here will be the first major revision of the model in almost 40 years. The last somewhat intensive refresh was in 1990. In the intervening years, the G-Class has seen milder updates to ensure its success and relevance in an increasingly hot luxury SUV market, as well as to with regulations. The 2018 model however, will have much more extensive changes under the skin.

The next generation G-Class will receive a wider chassis, but Mercedes-Benz opted to keep the length and height unchanged. Current rumors state that the new SUV will weigh up to 900lbs less than the outgoing model, thereby increasing its performance and economy. It will also receive a version of the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 found in the C63 and AMG GT, as well as a six-cylinder diesel—although that isn't likely to find its way stateside. In G65 trim, will also receive a revised twin-turbocharged V-12.

Additionally, the interior will be all-new, likely using similar materials and electronic aids to those of the new S-Class, meaning the next generation G-Class SUV will remain worthy of its six-figure price tag.

In the video below, the 2018 G-Class appears to be undergoing trailer testing in the south of France. Based on each SUVs wheels and brakes, neither looks like an AMG model.

The new G-Class will likely debut at a major auto show, possibly Geneva, early next year.
