Amidst the endless rumors of a mid-engine Chevy Corvette come these spy shots of what is not just another C7 Z06 or Grand Sport. Thanks to several telltale signs, we think this is the 2018 Corvette ZR1.
The first are the fixed mounts for what can only be a sizeable rear wing, which appears to be stashed inside the black-and-silver car. These sit slightly further inward than the mounts on the C7R, the only C7 fitted with a wing to date. Unfortunately, the angle of the photos makes it difficult to identify other details on the tail and unable to see what kind of diffuser the car is running.
Second is the heavy camo used on the front end, which implies that Chevy REALLY doesn’t want anyone to see what is going on there. A mild update of the Z06, as some have speculated, would not necessitate this kind of coverage. The bulge is definitely much larger, something that is more pronounced on the red-roofed car.
Speculation as to what is underhood of the ZR1 has been rampant; candidates have included a juiced version of the Z06’s blown 6.2-liter LT4 V-8 and a new twin-turbo V-8. Given that the Z06, as well as the ZL1 and the C6 ZR1, all push 650 hp, the C7 ZR1 would have to join the seven-handle club with authority to put enough daylight between the lesser – and prior – models to justify its six-figure pricetag. Say 750 hp? The driveline may not be able to handle that much, but we can believe, at least until the car is unveiled, likely in January at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show.
