2017 Genesis G80 Sedan Is a Rebadged Hyundai Genesis
Joins the flagship G90 as Genesis brand's midsize model.
Hyundai's new Genesis luxury brand made a splash at the 2016 Detroit auto show with its new flagship G90 sedan, but the big S-Class competitor wasn't the only Genesis-badged car on the Hyundai stand. Also on display was the Genesis G80 sedan, which, other than a few badging changes, appears identical to the existing Hyundai Genesis.
Genesis doesn't appear to have made any noticeable changes to the sedan other than doing away with Hyundai's "H" emblem and adding a "G80" designation. The "3.8" badge on the trunklid suggests that it will come standard with the same 311-hp V-6 engine found in the current Hyundai Genesis sedan. We do expect the G80 to soon adopt the new 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 that will be offered on the G90, possibly to supplant the 5.0-liter V-8 that's currently optional for the Hyundai.
The full-size G90 and midsize G80 sedans make up two of the six new models that the new luxury brand plans to launch by 2020. Also in the pipeline are a 3 Series-fighting G70 sedan, a G60 coupe (inspired by the Vision G concept), and two unnamed SUV models.
Expect to hear more details soon about the rollout of the Genesis brand over the next few months, as the 2017 Genesis G90 will be the first model to go on sale in the U.S. later this year.
