2016 Chevrolet Cruze Spied

Our spy photographers got another look at the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze sedan, which is expected to make its official debut next year. This time around, we got a better look at the new compact sedan’s lights, most notably the Corvette-inspired taillights.

Out back, the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze wears the same squared-off taillights with U-shaped red lighting elements. The lights are topped by a clear bar that appears to house both the turn signals and reversing lights. The taillights wrap onto the rear fenders, and the trunk itself appears to have a subtle lip spoiler. On the other end, the car’s headlights are projector-style units mounted in angled housings that sweep back onto the Cruze’s front fenders.

As when we spotted it before, this 2016 Chevrolet Cruze prototype shows that the compact sedan will move to a new nose inspired by that of the Chevrolet Sonic, with a tall and narrow grille opening between the headlights. The front is rounded and tapers toward the grille, likely for aerodynamic reasons. The windshield has an extremely shallow angle, as does the rear windshield, creating a graceful coupe-like silhouette as opposed to the fairly standard three-box look of the current Chevrolet Cruze.

We previously saw that the interior of the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze will have more expressive curves and contours on the dashboard, while the center stack will adopt a slightly concave lower section for several buttons and audio input ports. We expect the car to use the same flashy MyLink interface already offered on today’s Cruze LTZ, and to add gadgets like lane-departure warning and parking sensors. Additionally, push-button start and engine stop-start functions were fitted to a previous tester caught by our spy shooter.

The redesigned Chevrolet Cruze was expected to debut this year as a 2015 model, but reports suggest the car’s design process was delayed. It’s also likely that the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze will offer a hatchback version in the U.S. Although a five-door Cruze is currently sold in Europe, General Motors’ Mark Reuss told reporters last year that not bringing the Cruze hatch to America was, “a pre-bankruptcy planning mistake.”

Expect GM to reveal the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze either late this year or early in 2015.
