2015 Volvo V60 Engine Choices Detailed

V60 engine choices detailed.

When the 2015 Volvo V60 goes on sale in the U.S. early in 2014, the Swedish wagon will be offered with a choice of three engines. In addition to two engines that are already offered in the S60 sedan on which the Volvo V60 is based, the wagon will feature the first U.S. application of Volvo’s “Drive-E” engine technology.

The 2015 Volvo V60 was introduced to the U.S. market at the 2013 New York auto show. Although the five-door variant of the S60 had been offered in Europe for some time, it only debuts in Stateside next year. The car’s base engine is a new 2.0-liter turbo-four rated for 240 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque; it will be available only with front-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 2.0-liter turbo mill is part of Volvo’s new Drive-E engine series. The automaker says the engines are lighter than and up to 26 more fuel efficient than the engines they replace. In addition, Drive-E engines are specifically engineered so Volvo could easily add a hybrid option at a later date. The European version of the Volvo V60 is already offered with a plug-in hybrid option that mates a turbodiesel inline-five engine and an electric motor, but that arrangement isn’t scheduled to make it to the American market.

The other two engine choices for the 2015 Volvo V60 are familiar from the S60 sedan. The company’s “T5” 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-five produces 250 hp and 266 lb-ft, and is offered only with all-wheel drive. The V60 R-Design will use a “T6” 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine good for 325 hp and 354 lb-ft, again mated exclusively to all-wheel drive. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard for both of these engines.

Although the current S60 sedan is offered with a 300-hp version of the T6 engine, a Volvo representative said that it will not be offered in the V60. Moreover, in a few years’ time, the Volvo V60 will drop the T5 and T6 engines in favor of new, more efficient Drive-E options that have yet to be announced.

Pricing and fuel economy for the 2015 Volvo V60 will be announced closer to its on-sale date. The car is expected to go on sale in January 2014.
