Although we have just seen the first photos of the face-lifted Tiguan (seen in photos here), VW is already working on the replacement, due in early 2015. Based on the same new architecture that will underpin the next-generation Golf (the “MQB” components set), the new Tiguan promises to become lighter, stiffer, safer, more economical, and more fun to drive.
The new architecture is to be paired with a fresh generation of gasoline and diesel four-cylinder engines, which are up to 20 percent more frugal and some 55 pounds lighter than the current powertrains. The lineup is expected to look like this: 1.4-liter, 140 hp, 185 lb-ft; 2.0-liter, 180 hp, 235 lb-ft; 2.0-liter, 220 hp, 255 lb-ft; 2.0 turbo-diesel, 140 hp, 235 lb-ft; 2.0 TDI, 175 hp, 295 lb-ft. Waiting in the wings are a high-performance, 204-hp oil-burner and a more efficient seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Also in the works is a plug-in hybrid, which should feature a choice of two electric motors delivering 80 hp and 110 hp, respectively.
There will be an even roomier long-wheelbase edition, but as with the current generation, it will be sold only in China. It is at this point not known whether the marketing department wants to continue with two different front ends. Apparently, designers have proposed a more clear-cut split between the on-road model (an even sportier R variant is also in the cards) and the off-road version (an off-road package could cater to the hard-core crowd). All-wheel drive will still be optional on smaller-engined models. Finally, the Haldex differential will be improved in terms of weight, size, and friction.
