America’s best-selling car will be going under the knife for 2015, and the refreshed version of the Toyota Camry will be first shown at the 2014 New York auto show in a few weeks. Toyota says that this update will comprise more significant changes than is typical for a midcycle refresh as the company attempts to keep its midsizer at the top of the family sedan sales heap.
The current Toyota Camry was redesigned for 2012, just before a raft of midsize sedan competitors including the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Ford Fusion raised the bar with their 2013 redesigns. Although the Camry retained the best-seller crown in 2013, others have been catching up more recently, with the Nissan Altima beating out the Camry’s sales so far in 2014.
In fall 2013, Toyota group vice president Bill Fay told reporters the current Toyota Camry would receive “significant attention” in 2014. He said then, “There were some who wanted to write Camry off this year, and it didn’t happen. It’s safe to say we’ll be doing something with it.”
This refreshed 2015 Toyota Camry should receive updated exterior styling and a revised interior design with better materials. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder, 3.5-liter V-6, and hybrid powertrains should remain relatively unchanged, but we expect Toyota to improve on the current car’s relatively uncompetitive fuel economy ratings. The four-cylinder Camry is currently rated at 25/35 mpg city/highway, which lags behind the Nissan Altima’s 27/38 mpg rating. This may mean that the Camry could move from its six-speed automatic to a more efficient continuously variable transmission like the 2014 Toyota Corolla compact sedan uses. The suspension is also likely to receive retuning for better handling.
