Following up on the standard WRX, the 2015 Subaru WRX STI is one of the most anticipated new performance cars of the year. To give it a thorough shake-down, our colleagues at Motor Trend took the new STI to the track, to their testing grounds, and to winding mountain roads to see how it stacks up against its predecessor.
Although the 2015 Subaru WRX STI rides on a new, stiffer platform, and has many mechanical changes, there are no updates under the hood. The car continues to use a 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four engine rated for 305 hp, along with a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. Nonetheless, MT manages to rocket the new STI to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds, and runs through the quarter-mile in 13.1 seconds at 104 mph. While that quarter-mile time is 0.7 second quicker than MT managed for the old car, Carlos Lago cautions that real STI owners probably shouldn’t subject their cars to the abusive clutch-dump launch required to effect such acceleration times.
At Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway, Lago is soon impressed by the STI’s handling prowess on track. “It’s really easy to get to speed with,” he says. “It has a rather forgiving chassis balance and a tendency to understeer. The stability as we… go into fifth gear at 120 mph is pretty good.”
Although Lago complains that the new 2015 Subaru WRX STI uses an unchanged carryover engine, rather than a new engine, he ultimately says the STI’s myriad enhancements make it worth the extra price compared to the regular, 268-hp WRX. “Where the WRX begins to falter, the STI gives the driver just that much more control,” he says. “It simply makes for a faster, and better handling car.”
