Jaguar Land Rover’s new Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) is looking to make a strong statement with its first performance project, the 2015 Range Rover Sport SVR. We’ve seen footage of the high-performance SUV prototype testing on the Nürburgring, but now we’ve got some cold hard numbers: the 2015 Range Rover Sport SVR lapped the ‘Ring in 8 minutes and 14 seconds.
Land Rover says this is the fastest lap time for any production SUV around the German racetrack. For some perspective, the sprightly, 2465-lb, carbon fiber Alfa Romeo 4C coupe lapped the Nürburgring in 8 minutes and 4 seconds—just 10 seconds quicker. Remember, we’re talking about a seriously beefy SUV here. While exact measurements for the 2015 Range Rover Sport SVR aren’t available yet, the 510-hp Range Rover Sport Supercharged weighs 5093 lbs, more than two Alfa 4C coupes combined.
Making its debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, the 2015 Range Rover Sport SVR harnesses its 542 hp (550 PS) from a highly-tuned version of the Range Rover Sport’s 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine. Don’t think it’s just about power, though—the SVO team also modified the anti-roll system for improved cornering, while tuning the all-wheel-drive system and eight-speed ZF automatic transmission to meet the extreme demands of the iconic Nürburgring.
Jaguar Land Rover SVO says that despite the focus on performance, the 2015 Range Rover Sport SVR has the same off-road capabilities we’d expect from a Range Rover. It still uses a two-speed transfer case and can ford water depths of up to 33.5 inches. Should the Nürburgring ever become catastrophically flooded, we know which keys we’re grabbing.
The 2015 Range Rover Sport SVR is slated to arrive in showrooms in 2015. Expect a starting price well beyond that of the $80,025 2014 Range Rover Sport Supercharged.
