2015 Mercedes-Benz SL400 Receives New Turbocharged V-6

The new twin-turbocharged V-6 engine that debuted recently on the redesigned Mercedes-Benz C-Class and ML-Class will find its way into the 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL400 as well, creating a new entry-level model for this hardtop convertible. The SL400 model will join the existing SL550, SL63 AMG, and SL65 AMG models, presumably at a lower price point than the $107,825 SL550.

In this application, the 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V-6 makes 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque and mates with a seven-speed automatic transmission. Compared with the 429-hp SL550 and its 4.7-liter, twin-turbo V-8, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL400 only gives up an estimated 0.6 seconds in its 0-60 mph time, but gets significantly better fuel economy. According to the EPA, the SL400 is rated at 20/27 mpg city/highway compared to the SL550’s 17/24 mpg.

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL400 marks the first time a Mercedes-Benz SL roadster has been offered in the U.S. with a six-cylinder engine since 1998, when the fourth-generation SL dropped its inline-six engines from the lineup. This new V-6 engine is also featured in the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C400 4Matic and the 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML400 4Matic; expect it to go into other models like the E-Class in the near future.

In other 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class news, the SL63 AMG model now includes its Performance Package features as standard equipment—this package consists of a limited-slip differential; a higher, 186-mph top speed; and increased power to 557 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. There will also be a new Black Diamond Edition of the SL550 with specially trimmed black Nappa leather seats, 19-inch AMG wheels, diamond white exterior paint, and piano black trim inside.

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL400 goes on sale this month, joining the rest of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class models that are already at dealerships nationwide.
