The redesigned 2015 Hyundai Sonata is the sixth mainstream midsize sedan to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick + award, and it joins the 2015 Genesis luxury sedan as Hyundai’s second-ever model to earn this highest crash safety rating.
Requirements for the Top Safety Pick + award include “Good” ratings in the IIHS’ moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests; either a “Good” or “Acceptable” rating in the difficult small overlap front crash test’ and at least a “Basic” rating for front crash prevention technology. The 2015 Hyundai Sonata has an optional forward collision warning system available on Limited and Sport 2.0T models, so those trim levels get the Top Safety Pick + designation; Sonatas without this option receive the standard Top Safety Pick award.
To get the forward collision warning system, you have to opt for the 2015 Hyundai Sonata’s Ultimate Package, which costs $4950 in the Sport 2.0T and $1550 in the Limited, where it also requires adding the $3500 Tech Package. That means that you’ll have to pony up either $32,385 for a Sonata Limited so equipped, or $34,335 for a Sport 2.0T model with the forward collision warning system. Other midsize TSP+ competitors like the Honda Accord and Chevrolet Malibu offer their forward collision warning systems in lower trim levels, meaning that you’ll pay less for a TSP+-rated Accord EX-L ($29,060) or Malibu 2LT ($29,205). All prices include destination. Other Top Safety Pick + competitors include the Mazda 6, Ford Fusion, and Subaru Legacy.
It remains to be seen whether the Hyundai Sonata will still be a Top Safety Pick + under the revised IIHS criteria that’s set to go into effect in 2015. These changes mean that only cars with a front crash prevention score of “Advanced” or “Superior” will be rated TSP+, although all crash test requirements will stay the same. The IIHS will announce the new TSP+ winners this December.
The 2015 Hyundai Sonata is on sale now for a base price of $21,960 including destination. It comes with either a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine in SE, Sport, and Limited models; a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the Eco model; or a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the Sport 2.0T trim.
