We knew this was in the works, but now we seem to have our first look at the upcoming ATS-V sport sedan, albeit clad in camouflage.
While this may not be the best look at the new car, we can make out a number of important changes that demarcate this ATS as the high-performance V model. Most notable are the larger wheels and the quad exhaust tips spotted on this tester, poking out from what looks to be a revised rear diffuser. Up front, we can clearly see bigger intakes that eschew the lower LED running lights found on the normal ATS. The grille has also been revised and looks slightly larger, as well.
All this added space for airflow makes sense – recent rumors have pointed toward the ATS-V being powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 fettled to the tune of around 380 hp. However, our spy shooter noted that the car pictured here had “an impressive exhaust note that sounded more V-8 than V-6.” From the pictures, we can’t tell if the 556-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 from the CTS-V would fit or not.
If the ATS-V does, in fact, end up with 380 hp, it doesn’t stack up well against the competition. The BMW M3 pumps out 414 hp from its 4.0-liter V-8 (and the 2015 M3/M4 is expected to have similar output), while the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG churns 451 hp from its 6.2-liter V-8. That said, the ATS-V would trump the Audi S4’s 333 hp from its supercharged 3.0-liter V-6.
Currently, the most potent powerplant the ATS uses is a 321-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine coupled to a six-speed automatic. Buyers can also choose from a 2.5-liter I-4 good for 202 hp or a 272-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four, which can be mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic.
