The Ultimate Driving Machine just got more ultimate. In honor of three decades since the inception of the first BMW M5, the German automaker will produce a limited-run 30th Anniversary Edition version of the 2015 BMW M5. While the current M5 is a handful already, this special-edition super-sedan totals a berserk 600 hp—the highest output ever for a production BMW vehicle.
The 2015 BMW M5 30th Anniversary Edition builds even further upon the goodies included in the M5 Competition Package. Introduced first for the 2014 model year, the BMW M5 Competition Package increases power from the M5’s 560-hp, 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine to 575 hp. For the 30th Anniversary Edition 2015 BMW M5, Munich decided to increase turbocharger pressure and enhance the engine control module to boost output to a nice, round 600 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque (versus 502 lb-ft in a standard M5.)
In addition to the Competition Package’s stiffer springs, dampers, roll bars, lower ride height, and recalibrated stability control system, the 30th Anniversary Edition M5 gets revised software for the Active M Differential, and unique tuning for the electric power steering for more fun during high-performance driving. When all is said and done, the 30th Anniversary Edition 2015 BMW M5 sprints to 60 mph in a mere 3.7 seconds. That’s down from the 4.1 seconds claimed for a standard, non-Competition Package car with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Special exterior badging reading “30 Jahre M5” (30 years of M5) adorn the iconic kidney grilles, front fenders, door handles, and exhaust pipes. Inside, additional badging can be found embroidered into the Alcantara and leather sport seats and imprinted on the door sills.
Munich will build 300 units of the special-edition M5, with 30 bound for U.S. shores. BMW will reveal portions of the reservation hotline phone number beginning May 17 on its Instagram account, until May 21. The first 29 callers when the line opens at 1 p.m. Eastern on May 21 will be eligible to reserve the 30th Anniversary Edition 2015 BMW M5, while the 30th example will remain in the care of BMW of North America.
We gushed over the BMW M5 when it was revised for the 2012 model year, lauding its fantastic steering and superb refinement. If we thought its 560-hp V-8 could “rip that smile of your face with outrageous acceleration,” a 600-hp version sounds like it will burn a few eyeballs, as well. Starting price for the 30th Anniversary Edition 2015 BMW M5 is $138,275 including all delivery fees. An ordinary M5, including the $7300 Competition Package, gas guzzler, and delivery charges, totals a relatively more palatable $102,425.
