2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Spied

BMW's better-looking 3 Series sedan sheds some of its camouflage.

Now that the 2014 BMW 4 Series coupe and convertible, and the performance-tuned 2015 M4 is more or less completely on the record, are there any secrets left in the 4 Series range? Perhaps one – the new 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe has yet to be given a proper introductioh, but our spy photographer managed to catch the four-door fastback wearing very little camouflage.

In all honesty, what you see here shouldn’t be all that surprising. The front sheetmetal is all cribbed from its 4 Series siblings, while its rakish roofline and rounded rear haunches are clearly inspired by its big brother, the 2014 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. Judging by the wheel/tire package, the chiseled lower front fascia, and the Estoril Blue exterior paint on this prototype, it seems this 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is decked out with the M Sport Line package.

As yet another variant of the latest 3- /4 Series lineup, expect the 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe to be virtually mechanical to its siblings. 428i models will likely utilize a 240-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, while 435i models will use a 300-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine. Although an earlier report hinted at the possibility of a 420i variant, fitted with the 180-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter engine used in the budget-minded BMW 320i sedan, the idea of a value-leading model seems to clash with the high-end, design-oriented nature of the 4 Series Gran Coupe itself. All-wheel drive Xdrive models are likely to be offered in addition to the standard rear-wheel drive models. Seeing as the M6 is offered in Gran Coupe form, it would not be the least bit shocking to see an M4 Gran Coupe launched further down the line.

If the 2015 4 Series Gran Coupe adheres to the same pricing strategy as the 6 Series Gran Coupe, expect the four-door coupe to run roughly $2500 more than a comparably equipped coupe. If so, a 2015 428i Gran Coupe could start somewhere close to $44,000, while a 435i Gran Coupe could carry a base price just north of $49,000. Expect the 4 Series Gran Coupe to debut and launch early next year.|
