The 2014 Volkswagen Beetle is the latest model to receive Volkswagen’s new 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This means better fuel economy and more torque for the Beetle, but not a higher price. The 2014 Volkswagen Beetle 1.8T retains a starting price of $21,115 for the coupe and $25,990 for the convertible, both with destination.
The new direct-injected 1.8T, which can also be found in the Jetta and Passat for 2014, makes 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. That’s the same amount of horsepower and 7 lb-ft more torque than the 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine it replaces. The 2014 Volkswagen Beetle 1.8T coupe comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission with a six-speed automatic costing $1100 extra. The Volkswagen Beetle 1.8T convertible comes only with the automatic transmission.
In addition to the torque boost over the old five-cylinder, the 1.8T engine also gives the Beetle a significant mpg bump. For the coupe, EPA ratings go up to 25/33/28 mpg with the automatic and 24/33/27 mpg city/highway/combined with the manual. Comparing automatic models of the 1.8T and the old five-cylinder, the new engine goes up three mpg in the city and four mpg on the highway. The Beetle 1.8T convertible is now rated at 24/32/27 mpg city/highway/combined, which is an increase of three mpg city, four mpg combined, and five mpg on the highway.
The 2014 Volkswagen Beetle continues to be available with a larger, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in R-Line models, which start at $25,815 for coupes and $30,215 for convertibles; and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine in TDI models, from $25,415 in coupes and $29,715 for convertibles. Volkswagen Beetle models equipped with the 1.8T engine are on sale now.
