A round of minor updates were announced for the 2014 Ram 1500 pickup this morning, including more specifications surrounding the new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel model. The automaker also announced that the 2014 Ram 1500 will start at $25,295, after a $1095 destination charge, and that the EcoDiesel would cost “$2850 greater than a similarly equipped Hemi-powered Ram 1500.”
The biggest news for the 2014 Ram light-duty truck line is the addition of the more-efficient EcoDiesel model. While EPA estimates have yet to be determined, we can assume that the diesel-powered Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will achieve better ratings than the 18/25 mpg city/highway scored by the 2014 Ram 1500 powered by the gasoline V-6 (up one mpg in the city from 2013). Towing estimates have not been announced for the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel yet, either. Ram announced the oil-burning powerplant for the 2014 1500 earlier this year, stating that its owners were clamoring for a light-duty diesel.
Powering the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is a 3.0-liter turbo-disel V-6 engine supplied by VM Motori, a long-time Chrysler engine supplier. The unit is also found under the hood of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel and is rated for the same 240 hp at 3600 rpm and a stump-pulling 420 lb-ft of toque at just 2000 rpm. Just as in the Grand Cherokee, the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel pairs the 3.0-liter with an eight-speed automatic transmission. To help quell NVH, the Ram’s diesel V-6 utilizes heat-treated aluminum cylinder heads with individual bearing caps, a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, and aluminum alloy pistons. Keeping the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel’s exhaust clean is a Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system unique to the Ram, which will still maintain full engine power even when the DEF level is low. Ram expects owners to have to refill the eight-gallon DEF tank once every 10,000 miles on average, which roughly lines up with the engine’s prescribed oil change intervals.
The rest of the Ram 1500 line sees minor tweaks for 2014. The two gas powertrains remain from 2013 – choices are a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 good for 305 hp at 6400 rpm and 269 lb-ft at 4175 mated to an eight-speed automatic, or a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 rated at 395 hp at 5600 rpm and 407 lb-ft at 3950 rpm with either a six- or eight-speed automatic (depending on configuration). Upgrades include a front park assist system, a new pulse-width modulation system for the fuel delivery and cooling fan with a humidity sensor, and new F1234yf air conditioning refrigerant that is more eco-friendly. There are two new exterior colors for the 2014 Ram 1500: Blue Streak and Granite Crystal.
All of the 2014 Ram 1500 models, including the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, will go on sale in the fourth quarter of this year.
