In October we reported that the redesigned MINI Cooper, which will arrive as a 2014 model, was going to be featured in a TV commercial featuring an English bulldog named Spike. That ad has arrived, and it definitely smells of Mini’s sense of humor.
Mini has long celebrated its rally heritage and off-beat personality, particularly the Mini Cooper’s low bulldog-stance and fun attitude. English bulldog Spike isn’t so sure about the comparison at first glance, but comes around once he pokes his nose into the dual-tailpipes of the 2014 Mini Cooper S.
What follows is a rather entertaining montage of dog-out-the-window cruising, which is interspersed with shots showcasing the various features included in the new 2014 MINI Cooper S. A switch-button start/stop mechanism gets the car fired up, at which point the adaptive headlights shift into place. The head-up display, similar to the retractable panel used in the 2014 Mazda 3, displays full-color navigation as man and his best friend kick the car into Sport mode for some added growl.
The 2014 Mini Cooper is longer, wider, and heavier than its predecessor. Accommodating the added bulk is a new line of engine options, including a fresh turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder in the base Cooper, which makes 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. For the sportier 2014 Mini Cooper S, output totals 189 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque from the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder.
The on-sale date for the 2014 Mini Cooper is slotted for this coming spring. For now, keep an eye out for future ads featuring Spike, one of which should show him defending his newfound Mini Cooper friend against a Great Dane.
